OUR MOTIVATION

The fundamental conviction is that once ecosystems are restored and soundly maintained and managed they will continue providing ecosystem services that feed into livelihood systems that sustain local populations and at the same time insulate these livelihoods from potential weather-induced extreme events.

This can further be sustained if local communities are supported to develop and maintain appropriate capacities to climate-proof their livelihoods and reduce over-reliance on negative coping mechanisms.

A seamless loop connecting sound natural resource utilisation and management is imminent.

The organisation believes that allowing continued rural deprivation serves to sustain the traditional rural to urban migration thereby exerting additional pressure on the already overwhelmed urban management systems, now seriously undermined by frequent climate and weather-induced extreme events that send thousands of urban communities, particularly the urban poor, in extreme vulnerabilities as their coping capacities are seriously eroded.

The organisation's philosophical underpinnings are anchored on the potential ecosystem-based solutions, commonly dubbed “nature-based solutions” in building symbiotic relationship between nature and man through a duality of prudent environmental or natural resource management practices and enhancement of human capacities to profit from the protection of nature by interventions that focus on restoration of damaged aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and maintenance of restored and intact systems.

The organisation further takes cognisance of the gender sensitive nature of climate impacts that tend to severely affect women and girls more than their male counterparts owing to multiple factors that widen the former's vulnerability index.

Persons with disabilities are equally severely affected. Thus, deliberate mechanisms to build their resilience are a necessity as they shoulder the bulk of the impacts at family and community levels.

This is why tailor-made empowerment interventions are an integral part of SUVIZA's multilayer programming.

As alluded to in the ‘about’ section above and as reflected in the vision and mission statement, our utmost motivation is to see resilient communities whose capacities have been built to adequately prepare for and respond to the most common hazards that undermine their livelihoods.

All this has to be evidence-based and locally driven.

We do not believe in relying on speculation to inform our programming nor do we seek to promote interventions that do not speak to local aspirations.
